Recently, Orvis sent us the NEW GALE FORCE SLING PACK WATERPROOF BAG to test out.
We took it to Puerto Rico, Key Biscayne, Charlotte Harbor and even kayak fishing in the Everglades.
It definitely did better than expected. Unlike most waterproof bags we have used in the past, we have mostly good things to say about this one.
PROS
The construction of the zipper and zipper cover is well done and provides a true seal.
The external flaps cover the actual zipper, which gives it a bit more water resistance than the zippers on other bags.
Double zippers provide access to a smaller front compartment and larger back compartment for ease of use in getting to your gear.
Overall construction is solid and well done.
CONS
A fairly expensive extra at $129
Closing the bag completely requires a conscious effort to get the zipper’s pull tab all the way to the end of the zipper track.
We found that if the zipper was not completely closed, water could seep into the bag. Which makes sense, but we’d like to see a zipper that’s a little easier to close all the way.
